Fence around
Monument
Photos show it; also on the zinc-cut used as stationery by
PA. There are cement post holes that seem to match up. Do we have a photo on
or before April 1907 to know that it’s the fence we know?
CHS doc letter from Wm. Kramer, civil engineer and surveyor
in 1907 indicated that the fence which surrounded the monument and plots parcel
had fenced in land not owned by PA. The fence had been in position for 20 years
since 1887, but cemetery rules override possession. He recommended they go to Waldheim and ask
for the additional parcels. Looks like they got the extra land for $100. But
newer ILHS minutes (with Larry) state that the ornamental fence was installed
in 1893.
PA minutes show it was to be painted blue and black in the
40s. And Edward Wagenknecht visited it as a child and wrote that it was always
kept freshly painted in red, black, and gold. (get a rough date on this.) ILHS
notes indicated it was taken down?/maybe by cemetery? and they looked at a proposal to replace it in
2008? Discussed replacing it in 2009?
